#1,218 – Stretching Items in TreeView across Entire Control

You can define a custom data template for items in a TreeView, displaying any content you like in a panel, for each data item.

There’s a problem with doing this, however, if you want the container in the data template to stretch the entire width of the TreeView. In the sample below, we have a data template for a dog breed the displays data across three columns in a Grid. We’ve set the middle column up as star-sized so that the rightmost column (first letter of the breed) sits on the far right of the grid. In the TreeView, we set HorizontalContentAlignment to Stretch, to try getting this grid to stretch across the entire width of the TreeView.

        <TreeView Grid.Row="0" Margin="5" ItemsSource="{Binding Breeds}" HorizontalContentAlignment="Stretch">
            <TreeView.Resources>
                <HierarchicalDataTemplate DataType="{x:Type loc:Breed}" ItemsSource="{Binding Dogs}">
                    <Grid Margin="0,5,0,0">
                        <Grid.ColumnDefinitions>
                            <ColumnDefinition Width="Auto"/>
                            <ColumnDefinition/>
                            <ColumnDefinition Width="Auto"/>
                        </Grid.ColumnDefinitions>

                        <TextBlock Grid.Column="0" Text="Breed:"/>
                        <TextBlock Grid.Column="1" Margin="5,0,0,0" FontWeight="Bold" Text="{Binding Name}"/>
                        <TextBlock Grid.Column="2" Margin="0,0,3,0" FontStyle="Italic" Text="{Binding FirstLetter}"/>
                    </Grid>
                </HierarchicalDataTemplate>

                <HierarchicalDataTemplate DataType="{x:Type loc:Dog}">
                    <StackPanel Orientation="Horizontal" Margin="0,2,0,0">
                        <TextBlock Text="{Binding}"/>
                    </StackPanel>
                </HierarchicalDataTemplate>
            </TreeView.Resources>
        </TreeView>

At runtime, you can see that this doesn’t work. The 3rd column is jammed up against the right side of the second column.

The problem has to do with the default ItemContainerStyle. It includes a control template for each data item that puts the main content for the data item in an auto-sized grid column, not allowing it to stretch across the control.

The solution is to override the ItemContainerStyle and tweak the column definitions to allow the content to extend across the Grid. Below is the full text of the modified style, including all dependent styles. The main style that can be used for a TreeView.ItemContainerStyle is named TreeViewItemStyle1. We’ve modified the style so that the control template has a Grid with only two columns. The second column contains the content and is star-sized.

#1,188 – Using an ItemContainerStyle to Animate Items in an ItemsControl

One common use when defining a new ItemContainerStyle for an ItemsControl is to do something special with either the currently selected item or the item that the mouse is currently over.

We can set property values for the currently selected item or the item that the mouse is over, using triggers and property setters.  You can also use a storyboard to animate a transition to a new property value.

Below, we do two things to animate the item that the mouse is currently over.  (Both are done in the Style used for the ItemContainerStyle).

  • Add a Setter for the LayoutTransform, containing a ScaleTransform
  • Trigger on IsMouseOver, setting up a storyboard to animate the ScaleX and ScaleY properties of the ScaleTransform
        <Style x:Key="FocusVisual">

#1,187 – Using an ItemContainerStyle to Change Items in an ItemsControl

One common use when defining a new ItemContainerStyle for an ItemsControl is to do something special with either the currently selected item or the item that the mouse is currently over.  The default template used as an ItemContainerStyle for a ListBox, for example, changes the background and border for both the selected item and the item that the mouse is currently over.

Below is an example where we change the FontWeight for the currently selected item (to SemiBold) and make the item larger, using a transform.  This method uses a trigger to change several properties.

        <Style x:Key="FocusVisual">
            <Setter Property="Control.Template">
                <Setter.Value>
                    <ControlTemplate>
                        <Rectangle Margin="2" SnapsToDevicePixels="true" Stroke="{DynamicResource {x:Static SystemColors.ControlTextBrushKey}}" StrokeThickness="1" StrokeDashArray="1 2"/>
                    </ControlTemplate>
                </Setter.Value>
            </Setter>
        </Style>
        <SolidColorBrush x:Key="Item.MouseOver.Background" Color="#1F26A0DA"/>
        <SolidColorBrush x:Key="Item.MouseOver.Border" Color="#a826A0Da"/>

#1,186 – Default ItemContainerStyle for a ListBox

The default style for the ItemContainerStyle of a ListBox (version 4.5.1 of the .NET Framework) is shown below.  The template is included within a style that includes some other default property values.

This style is applied to each ListBoxItem rendered in the ListBox.  The structure of each ListBoxItem is a Border surrounding a ContentPresenter.  More importantly, the style shows the default triggers that control how items are rendered when you move the mouse over an item or select an item.

        <Style x:Key="lbDefaultItemContainerStyle" TargetType="{x:Type ListBoxItem}">
            <Setter Property="SnapsToDevicePixels" Value="True"/>
            <Setter Property="Padding" Value="4,1"/>
            <Setter Property="HorizontalContentAlignment" Value="{Binding HorizontalContentAlignment, RelativeSource={RelativeSource AncestorType={x:Type ItemsControl}}}"/>
            <Setter Property="VerticalContentAlignment" Value="{Binding VerticalContentAlignment, RelativeSource={RelativeSource AncestorType={x:Type ItemsControl}}}"/>
            <Setter Property="Background" Value="Transparent"/>

The style references some other predefined resources, shown below:

        <Style x:Key="FocusVisual">

                    </ControlTemplate>
                </Setter.Value>
            </Setter>
        </Style>
        <SolidColorBrush x:Key="Item.MouseOver.Background" Color="#1F26A0DA"/>
        <SolidColorBrush x:Key="Item.MouseOver.Border" Color="#a826A0Da"/>
        <SolidColorBrush x:Key="Item.SelectedInactive.Background" Color="#3DDADADA"/>
        <SolidColorBrush x:Key="Item.SelectedInactive.Border" Color="#FFDADADA"/>

        <SolidColorBrush x:Key="Item.SelectedActive.Border" Color="#FF26A0DA"/>

You would use the main style as follows:

        <ListBox Margin="5" ItemsSource="{Binding MovieList}"
                 ItemContainerStyle="{DynamicResource lbDefaultItemContainerStyle}" />

#455 – Using ItemContainerStyle to Bind Data Elements in a Collection to a Grid

I showed earlier that to bind Grid.Row and Grid.Column properties on child items in an ItemsControl,  we need to set up the binding on the ContentPresenter elements that contain the individual items.  I did this by creating a class that inherited from ItemsControl and then set the bindings at runtime, programmatically.

There is a much easier way to do this, pointed out by reader Bruno (thanks Bruno)!

You can set up the bindings by specifying the ItemContainerStyle of the ItemsControl and using property setters to do the binding.

        <ItemsControl ItemsSource="{Binding ChessPieces}" Height="500" Width="500">
            <ItemsControl.ItemsPanel>
                <ItemsPanelTemplate>
                    <Grid ShowGridLines="True">
                        <Grid.RowDefinitions>
                            <RowDefinition Height="*"/>
                            <!-- 7 more rows -->
                        </Grid.RowDefinitions>
                        <Grid.ColumnDefinitions>
                            <ColumnDefinition Width="*"/>
                            <!-- 7 more columns -->
                        </Grid.ColumnDefinitions>
                    </Grid>
                </ItemsPanelTemplate>
            </ItemsControl.ItemsPanel>
            <ItemsControl.ItemTemplate>
                <DataTemplate>
                    <Label Content="{Binding Text}" HorizontalAlignment="Center" VerticalAlignment="Center"/>
                </DataTemplate>
            </ItemsControl.ItemTemplate>
            <ItemsControl.ItemContainerStyle>
                <Style>
                    <Setter Property="Grid.Row" Value="{Binding Row}"/>
                    <Setter Property="Grid.Column" Value="{Binding Column}"/>
                </Style>
            </ItemsControl.ItemContainerStyle>
        </ItemsControl>
